“WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT YOU DO SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY BRING YOU JOY?”
Earlier this week I had a friend ask me this and it stopped me dead in my tracks. To be honest, I don’t know that I have ever thought about it. The question but the question has weighed heavy on my heart since we ended that conversation. Most things in life are done for a specific purpose-to further your career, to grow in relationships, to make more money, to pursue a dream, to understand ourselves better. Don’t get me wrong, none of these things are inherently bad!! But to do something just for the sake of “This brings me joy and is therefore life-giving”, seems childish and is looked down on in our culture today.
But what if we NEED to do things for the simple reasons of experiencing joy, giving ourselves room to breathe, to let down and give ourselves permission to relax, and saying no to constantly being on the go for the sake of being on the go. Let’s be more intentional about slowing down. Let’s revive the lost art of taking up a hobby, of playing outside, of eating ice cream without thinking about the calories consumed, of driving out to the country to stargaze. I know, I know, these all sound so romantic and over the top, but what if we stopped minimizing the things that give our souls fresh air and actually gave ourselves permission to pursue joy for the sake of joy? The funny thing is that when we create time and space to do these things, we always come back refreshed, revitalized, and, well, more joyful.
SO, today I am challenging you to come up with a list of 5 things that you do (or want to do) to experience joy. They can be anything!! Once you come up with your list, put it into practice! Try to start incorporating at least one thing on your list each week. Here are some of the little joys that I came up with:
-eating mint chocolate chip ice cream
-watching disney movies
-keeping wildflowers in the house
-watching the sun rise
-refurbishing old furniture
-going for a long drive on a summer night
-reading a book in a hammock
What did you come up with? I would love to hear!
